Our First Post: Hi!

Stone Point Farm was established in 2025 by Grace Cannan and Rose Mitchell, though the dream of this farm was already decades old by then. We have both been called to live close to land and nature, to cultivate beautiful and nutritious things, and participate in the strengthening and sustainability of our local food shed. We raise pigs*, chickens and quail and have a variety of perennial fruits and vegetables growing throughout the property.

We named our farm with the intention of paying homage to the physical place we call home as well as to this moment on the timeline of the ancient relationship between humans and our animal kin. Our farm is located on Stony Point Road, so named by early European settlers for the rocky, hilly topography of this land that rises to the east above a gentle bend in the Hudson River. The land we call home now was colonized in the mid-17th century by the Vandenburgh family. Before that, it was home to the Mohican people, as well as the Schaghticoke and Haudenosaunee. We know there are people who lived here even before whose names have not been spoken for centuries or more. We walk this land with deep reverence in our hearts for the people who have previously called it home.

Over her years of farming in the Hudson Valley, Grace has learned that pigs are world class dirt turners. They roust about in the soil for tasty and nutritious rhizomes and roots, occasionally revealing artifacts from previous human occupants. Very often, she and her colleagues would find stone points of various kinds in fields where pigs have just been living. Arrow heads, spear points, meat and hide scrapers and knife blades are all examples of the ancient tool artifacts that have been found. They serve as reminders of those who lived here before, and of a covenant between humans and animals.

That covenant still exists today and shapes our values around animal husbandry. Once strictly between the hunter and the hunted, the covenant has evolved with agriculture and society, but the core tenant remains the same: we take the life of an animal to sustain the lives of our family and community members. As farmers, we first give life to the animals, and, because we respect the life of every sentient being and know the fate of these creatures, we work hard to ensure they live a healthy, happy life. We owe them our respect, and we are grateful for their gifts.

Stone Point Farm is our dream coming true, and we are honored to steward this land. With our name, we hope to represent the symbolic and practical magic of holding an ancient tool in our hands and being connected across the ages to all the two- and four- legged animals who have made this place home.
